Director Peter Yates didn't make a lot of movies, and most of them ain't great, but when he did make contact he could hit it out of the park. To wit: Bullitt (1969 w Steve McQueen), Breaking Away (1979 as noted here), and a favorite of Quentin Tarantino, Mother, Jugs & Speed ( 1976, Bill Cosby, Raquel Welsh, and Harvey Keitel, in that order).
Breaking Away really is a special movie. I toyed with giving it "Best Picture" in the Corrected Oscars; it's that good.
Great job. And I didn't realize/remember that Breaking Away was nominated. Loved that movie.
